The ESA softball team started out the season in impressive fashion. It all started with the pitching being backed by a big bat.
Jessica "No Mercy" Murphy pitched a gem for ESA. After a shaky first inning, unable to find the strike zone, Murphy allowed Chapel Hill to easily climb on top for a quick three-nothing lead. Unfortunately for the Chapel Hill batters, the sophomore pitcher zoned in and sent the batters back where they came from, keeping them from scoring again.
Working the leather for Murphy was ESA's freshman-phenomenon catcher that settled just as quickly into her role. Her feats behind the plate did not end there, however. Brittney "Double Barrel" Carroll sparked the home crowd and made history with a swing of her bat. After a sending out a pitch in a line-drive deep into center field, Carroll lost no time rounding the bases. Chapel Hill relayed the ball in as Carroll was just getting to third base but she beat the throw to home by a step or two, thus hitting the first homerun ever in school's history!
Eventhough this game was the first ever played by many members of the ESA team, each player that went up to the plate managed to score at least one run. These young ladies played an elegant balance of patience and aggressiveness, working the count with balls and strikes but also incorporating smart baserunning with their gameplan. This offensive powerhouse pumped out 19 runs in a matter of four fabulous innings.
Coach White will take her show on the road as the softball team will try to expand their winning streak to two games on Tuesday, April 25th against Boston Collegiate. Don't miss it!
